CBS News Optimistic About Iraq FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) reports on a CBS Evening News broadcast that seems a little too optimistic about the situation in Iraq. After Downing Street A coalition of activists groups has created a new web site calling for an investigation into whether President Bush has committed impeachable offenses in connection
with the Iraq war in light of the British memo containing minutes
of a secret July 2002 meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his top
national security officials. After Downing Street contains links to contact your representatives as well as U.S. media outlets, who have largely ignored the memo.
Expansion of Patriot Act Closed door meetings are being held by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence regarding renewing and expanding the Patriot Act. Among the most disturbing changes is the "administrative subpoena", which would grant FBI agents the authority to issue subpoenas without appearing before a judge. Read more about the issues on the ACLU web site and demand open, public hearings.
Extremist Judicial Nominations
Two of the most extreme judicial nominees, Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor, will soon be up for a vote due to the compromise over the filibuster. Stop John Bolton A vote on the nomination of John Bolton as UN Ambassador will likely take place on June 7. Contact your senators to urge them to vote against the nomination or send them an email via the Act for Change web site. Shut Down Guantánamo Sign the Act for Change petition calling on President Bush to shut down the Guantánamo prisoner of war camp, referred to as the "gulag of our times" by Amnesty International. Contact members of the
Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees urging them to shut
down Guantánamo and either try the remaining 540 detainees or release them.
