Latest News

Week of June 06 2005

CBS News Optimistic About Iraq
FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) reports on a CBS Evening News broadcast that seems a little too optimistic about the situation in Iraq. And this isn't the first time. Read the article and then contact CBS to let them know what you think. (contact info at the end of the article)

The Other Bomb Drops
Read the article by Jeremy Scahill on The Nation regarding new evidence citing increased bombing raids on Iraq's "no-fly zones" in the second half of 2002.

After Downing Street
A coalition of activists groups has created a new web site calling for an investigation into whether President Bush has committed impeachable offenses in connection with the Iraq war in light of the British memo containing minutes of a secret July 2002 meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his top national security officials. After Downing Street contains links to contact your representatives as well as U.S. media outlets, who have largely ignored the memo.

Expansion of Patriot Act
Closed door meetings are being held by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence regarding renewing and expanding the Patriot Act. Among the most disturbing changes is the "administrative subpoena", which would grant FBI agents the authority to issue subpoenas without appearing before a judge. Read more about the issues on the ACLU web site and demand open, public hearings.

Extremist Judicial Nominations
Two of the most extreme judicial nominees, Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor, will soon be up for a vote due to the compromise over the filibuster. Contact your senators and ask them to vote against these two lifetime appointments. See the PFAW web site for more information on Brown and Pryor, as well as other extremist nominees.

Stop John Bolton
A vote on the nomination of John Bolton as UN Ambassador will likely take place on June 7. Contact your senators to urge them to vote against the nomination or send them an email via the Act for Change web site. For more information on John Bolton, see the StopBolton.org web site created by Citizens for Global Solutions.

Shut Down Guantánamo
Sign the Act for Change petition calling on President Bush to shut down the Guantánamo prisoner of war camp, referred to as the "gulag of our times" by Amnesty International. Contact members of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees urging them to shut down Guantánamo and either try the remaining 540 detainees or release them.
