Bring the Troops Home Now!

Friday, March 19, 2010
Piazza di Montecitorio
From 5 to 7pm

On March 19th, U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice - Rome will be demonstrating, along with a number of Italian peace groups, for the immediate withdrawal of all occupying troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. We will also be calling for an end to other illegal military occupations, such as that of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, an end to the siege of Gaza and to the repression suffered by the Kurdish people in Turkey. The event will be held in solidarity with the national demonstrations taking place the next day in Washington, D.C. and in other U.S. cities to "Bring the troops home" and "End colonial occupation everywhere."

It's important to make our voice heard NOW. It would seem that the dragged-out, 9-year conflict in Afghanistan has made many of us accustomed to the idea of “pre-emptive, permanent war against terrorism”: the Bush doctrine. We see it as a very dangerous (as well as an immoral) principle, and one that could quickly lead to other "pre-emptive" wars: against Iran, against Yemen, against Sudan, etc.

So let's act NOW and demand that Obama repudiate that principle instead of letting it take root, with the pretext that it's just for another year or so! The United States can fight terrorism better with other means, and can obtain the natural resources it needs more cheaply in the long run through multilateral negotiation, instead of by occupying other peoples' countries.

In addition, the money we save by cutting our astronomical and ever-growing military budget can serve to boost our civil economy and finance much-needed social programs. By repudiating the "permanent war" mentality, we can strengthen our demands to bring an end to the torture and violation of human rights and dignity going on at Guantanamo and in the secret prisons in Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world, all done supposedly in "our name”.

Join with us on March 19th to say:

Not in our name! Stop war!

Say no to pre-emptive war!

Let's act now for “pre-emptive peace”; let's speak out for and in defence of our belief in peace and justice as the only way to move ahead!
