The fateful 10/15 demo

Our first joint demo

Our initial statement in solidarity with Pvt. Manning

17 December 2011

We, U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice - Rome, Italy, call on the Obama Administration to withdraw the charges it is making against Private Manning and to free him immediately. In particular, the charge of "aiding the enemy", which could lead to the death penalty or life in prison, must be withdrawn. We feel that it should not be considered a crime for a U.S. citizen to publicly denounce the apparently illegal acts committed by his or her government, after attempts at recourse through the prescribed channels have been stymied. This holds even when the pertinent documentation has been classified as secret, apparently in order to cover up the wrongdoing -- in this case, that the U.S. government does not hesitate to kill innocent people if and when it sees fit. Put more simply, we feel that it is not a crime to denounce a crime committed by one's government and cloaked in secrecy; it is a duty, and whoever does so should be honored, not put on trial.

In solidarity,
U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice - Rome
