Shailja Patel is an Asian African poet and spoken-word theater artist, as well as slam poet champion in the United States and activist in the peace and feminist movements.
With her poetry, recited through spoken word theater, in which the body and drama are used to transmit the poetry directly, Shailja has contributed in giving voice to the resistance opposing the barbarism of our times.
In her one-woman show, Migritude, from which she will read excerpts together with some of her poetry, Shailja explores global themes such as war, migrants, empire, culture and identity, gender. And awakens audiences to the humans behind the newscasts, the suffering and complexity beneath the ideology of war and imperialism.
In English, with a reading in Italian by Silvana Mariniello and Caterina Merlino.
Following the readings, an open discussion on the current scenes of war in the world and effective means of opposition with Stephanie Westbrook of U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice – Rome, Nadia Cervoni of Donne in Nero, Roma and journalist Enzo Mangini of Carta.
