Dissent is Patriotic – Troops Home Fast
July 4th in Rome, Italy

July 4th, 6-8pm
Piazza Navona

USC4P&J will mark the 4th of July-Independence Day with an informational/solidarity event. We plan to talk to and inform other U.S. citizens, who are visiting Rome, as well as Italians, by distributing flyers to them in Piazza Navona from 6-8 pm next Tuesday, July 4th.

The flyer will explain the "Troops Home Fast", a historic hunger strike being launched by activists on the 4th of July 2006 in Washington, DC in front of the White House. While many U.S. citizens will be expressing their patriotism via barbeques and fireworks, other patriots will be fasting in memory of the dead and wounded, the ongoing suffering of Iraqis and soldiers in this unjust war, and calling for the troops to come home from Iraq. Fasts and vigils will also take place in cities across the U.S. as well as Belfast, Berlin, Quito, and here in Rome. See the complete list of fasters which includes activists Cindy Sheehan and Daniel Ellsberg as well as veterans, celebrities, musicians, writers, religious leaders and over 1500 concerned citizens in the U.S. and around the world.

Many of us here in Rome will observe July 4th with a one day symbolic fast in solidarity. If you plan to fast, sign up on the Troops Home Fast web site.

We also plan to make people aware of the "Declaration of Peace" campaign which is to "declare peace by engaging in nonviolent action in cities and towns across the United States and in Washington, DC (and internationally) from September 21-28 if these goals — immediate withdrawal of US troops and a comprehensive plan to end the US war — are not accomplished by International Peace Day, September 21, 2006." Click on the logo below to sign the declaration:

As well as the Voters for Peace campaign, with a pledge to "not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a public position in his or her campaign." Click on the logo below to sign the pledge:

Please plan to participate in this event and bring along your PACE and/or U.S. Peace flags.

Note - fasting is not required to participate in the flyering at Piazza Navona.
