SHUT DOWN GUANTANAMO NOW!

Friday, January 11, 11am
U.S. Embassy, Rome, Italy
Via Veneto

Friday, January 11, marks six years of imprisonment without charge, isolation, beatings, torture and abuse at the notorious U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay. We will join Amnesty International, as we have in the past, on this Global Day of Action calling for the immediate closure of the prison and an end to illegal detentions. Events are planned in Washington, DC and throughout the world at U.S. embassies. Join us in Rome!

Nearly 800 prisoners have been held at Guantanamo since the first arrived, hooded and shackled, on January 11, 2002. Only 10 have ever been charged with a crime. Only one has ever been convicted, and that was Australian David Hicks as part of a plea bargain. It is estimated that 86% of the detainees were picked up by the Northern Alliance or Pakistani authorities at a time when the U.S. was offering large bounties. Today, 277 detainees remain, without charge and little hope of a fair trial.

We urge all U.S. citizens and our international friends to join us in front of the U.S. Embassy this Friday at 11am as we call for the closure of what has become a symbol of human rights abuse. Please let us know if you plan to come so we can have enough signs for everyone: info@peaceandjustice.it

Friday evening, some of us are also planning to hand out flyers (in English and Italian) while walking around in the center. We plan to meet at 7pm at the Pantheon. If you can't make it at 11am, join us in the evening as we spread the word about the horrors of Guantanamo.

PLEASE JOIN US FRIDAY IN ROME! (morning, evening or both!)

For more information on the day of action in Rome and throughout Italy, see the Amnesty Italy web site.

For more information on Guantanamo, see this fact sheet by Amnesty International.

See you on Friday!
